As a pair of long established Essex wedding photographers, we’ve shot at more barns than we’ve had hot dinners….well almost! Essex boasts some of the most beautiful barns in the country. There’s a unique variety of industrial barns, brick barns, traditional working barns and the more modern purpose built wedding barns. Each with their own quirks, features and selling points of course.
Below we are going to share with you some of our favourite barn wedding venues in Essex. We’ll even share why and show you some photos!
We hope this makes your wedding planning and venue search a little easier. And if you do find yourself looking for a photographer who’s experienced shooting barn weddings, we’d love to hear from you too! Sam & Louise
Maidens Barn– Barn wedding venues in Essex
As a recommended supplier at Maidens Barn, we’ve worked here lots over the years. One of our favourite things about Maidens barn, aside from the fact it’s gorgeous, is that the staff are brilliant. Alex, Katherine and the team truly look after you and Juliet is an absolute credit to the catering team. Unlike many venues, Maidens barn seems to have the same staff every time we work there, which makes forging relationships much easier. It also shows that the staff are dedicated and committed both to the venue and to making sure the couples who marry there have a wonderful day. It’s spacious whilst still being intimate and contemporary and maintaining it’s character.
Blake Hall– Barn wedding venues in Essex
Blake Hall is a sure favourite of ours. There’s just something about it! Maybe it’s the beautifully planted (and extensive!) gardens that are perfectly maintained year round. It could even be that there’s no expense spared when it comes to maintaining and improving the venue. It might be one of a hundred things, but it’s truly a fabulous venue. The setting is stunning and again, the staff are wonderful. We are also a recommended supplier here and it’s one of our locals!
Red Brick Barn– Barn wedding venues in Essex
Not many people seem to know of Red Brick Barn, but it’s a quirky one with a lot of personality. Also known to some as Sutton Hall, it’s a brick barn building that (as far as i’m aware) is available for dry hire. This means you can bring in your own catering team, drinks, marquee and so on to extend your space. The site itself is fairly industrial looking with metallic shutters etc. The brick building gives a warm, rustic feel however and boasts a stage. This is perfect if you’re planning to have a band. When it comes to the evenings celebrations this means things really kick off too. This makes it great for creating a party atmosphere.
At the right time of year there’s also a really nice looking field full of pretty rusticy wheat/corn (i’m not quite sure!) But it’s easily accessible without damaging the crop, which makes it a perfect backdrop for photos. Another bonus is the very random, but fantastically unique London Underground carriage on site!
Channels– Barn wedding venues in Essex
Channels Barn and Little channels are part of channels golf club. They’re two separate wedding venues operating in different areas of the larger channels estate.
The larger of the two bars is Channels barn and is a fairly typical, high ceilinged barn. It’s a lovely, pretty setting for a wedding with a relatively new dedicated garden area for wedding guests. This is a welcomed addition as previously guests had no designated area. As such they would tend to wander and end up in the nearby, but very much “off limits” golfers bar! The outdoor ceremony space is quaint and very lovely. It’s almost church like, out in the open and this is a big selling point! We’ve not come across anything like it elsewhere.
The only thing to keep in mind with Channels is that it seems to be very much golfers rule. Unfortunately we’ve often been told off for taking photos in pretty locations. This is in spite of the fact that the same locations are showcased on their website/ social media accounts. There are now set, designated areas for wedding parties. These have changed in the last year or so, so do bear this in mind when looking at photos online. If you’re thinking of marrying at Channels, discuss in advance with them where you’re allowed to use for photos. Ask what the arrangements are regarding golfers if this is likely to be something that bothers you.
Little Channels– Barn wedding venues in Essex
Little channels is the smaller of the two barns and is for smaller wedding or event celebrations. It’s more or less self contained with it’s own courtyard outside that can be great for setting up garden games. Also consider that it is ideal for keeping little ones “contained”. It’s small but perfectly formed and there’s even a little planted garden area that can be pretty for photos when the sun starts to drop.
Gaynes Park– Barn wedding venues in Essex
Gaynes Park is one of the wedding venues most local to us- and one of the prettiest. It’s one of the grander Barn wedding venues in Essex. With a stunning high ceiling traditional barn, orangery and extensive grounds and gardens, it is a first choice for many couples. We’ve always had great experiences working at Gaynes park. On site accommodation makes it a convenient “all in one” venue so you can get ready there, get wed and then stay there the same night too. The apple loft is quaint and charming. A perfect hide away during prep. The guest accommodation is also immaculate and modern.
No attention to detail has been spared. It’s a venue that really doesn’t need much done to it as it’s lovely as it, but similarly is easily customisable to make it your own. The food, is also superb!
Crondon Park– Barn wedding venues in Essex
It’s been a while since we last shot at Crondon park. It’s fairly similar to channels in terms of how it looks inside. It is however worlds apart considering it’s also a golf club. To be honest, you’d never know as Crondon the wedding venue is totally separate and there’s no golf/wedding overlap. Again, the food here is delicious! The designated garden area is ideal for little ones as it’s enclosed and a safe space. It gives an intimate feel without feeling small, which is always a hard balance to strike- but Crondon does it well.
Creeksea place barns– Barn wedding venues in Essex
Ideal for an intimate celebration, Creaksea place barns was the location of one of our all time favourite weddings. Typically rented out as accommodation, Creeksea place barns is a collection of smaller barns available to play host to smaller events. The other barns can be booked to accommodate your guest, making it an on site, weekend long do if you’d like! Also dog friendly, it’s perfect for the whole family. Having everything in one place not only makes the experience quite seamless, it’s also very personal. Everything and everyone you need is literally a stones throw away. An added bonus is that you can hire in your own catering (or DIY) you can provide your own drinks and decorate yourself the day before. Making it a very cost effective option.
The onsite cafe also makes for a great excuse to get together the next morning and reflect over breakfast. There are lots of features that make Creeksea an ideal place for a wedding reception- the open fields for pictures for example.
Houchins– Barn wedding venues in Essex
Is it a barn? Isn’t it? That depends who you ask, but we’re on team barn! Houchins is a modern, industrial(ish) barn is coggesshall. The thing about Houchins is it’s extremely pretty. The outdoor ceremony area is ideal. Open and spacious, but with a bit of cover making it a photographers dream- no glarey sunlight on a sunny day. It’s all very well kept and maintained and the staff are fab. The indoor ceremony space is also ideal, doubling up as the evening dance floor area. It can be sectioned off from the main room, so no one has to see your ceremony set up before you do!
The main seating area for your meal is spacious and feels completely open. The high ceilings work so well here! Decoration is also easy peasy and so effective. A little goes a long way. There are lots of places for photos. It’s relatively local to us and we would love to work here more often. It’s the perfect location to be creative and suits relaxed weddings down to the ground.
Crabbs Barn– Barn wedding venues in Essex
We’ve shot at Crabbs barn a few times over the years and one of the nicest things is that it’s consistent. No matter when you shoot there, things operate in very much the same way, which means that the day flows well and effortlessly. Staff are lovely and you get a choice of caterers I believe, so you can personalise the menu to best suit yourselves and your guests. We’ve shot everything here from afternoon tea to full 3 course meals and BBQs. The outdoor space is well contained making it great for those seeking an intimate feel. There’s also on site accommodation and plenty of parking.
The one surprising thing about Crabbs is that it’s s close to the main road and yet you’d never know as you cannot hear it at all! In addition there’s a beautiful field just opposite which is really nice for photos. The sun sets in just the right place!
The Reid Rooms– Barn wedding venues in Essex
Well if it’s good enough for Ed Sheeran, it’s good enough for us! The major selling point of the Reid Rooms for us is the fact that it has a beautiful outdoor meadow area for the ceremony. It’s a little way away from the venue itself and guests travel there on a tractor (laid on by the venue.) It’s an experience for guests and always produces great reactions. The meadow is stunning and just ideal if you’re after quite a natural, perhaps boho day. Alongside the meadow runs a little stream too, which means following your ceremony you can hop in a sailboat and meet your guests back at the venue ready for your reception. The venue itself offers all you could want from a barn venue really.
An indoor ceremony alternative and separate lounge area for older guests or those wanting quiet are nice additions. The bar and dance floor also have direct access to the outside, so evening guests/smokers and those wanting fresh air can nip in and out of the party. Another selling point is the outdoor space- a lovely courtyard area with a decked balcony. Accommodation is also available on site.
